Jebely has spent many years in the industry providing parts and support for traditional watch winder brands. Being based in Taiwan, they are better known in that market, as well as China, where they have been selling under their own banner for some time. However, a recent company strategy to build awareness in Europe and the US has seen some new units come from this old expert and the ‘Vintage’ line is one such example.
This piece sits comfortably in the ‘display’ category of winders, meant to be kept out and on show as opposed to locked in a safe. It lacks the battery power that would be a necessity for in-safe winders, but that’s fine here as it’s really not the target. The fit and finish is meant to be displayed and admired. Essentially, this is a traditional four-header – upright, controllable, and with a classic style.
The lock and key system is ornate, but is not supposed to prevent a hardened criminal with a crowbar. It will, however, stop younger members of the family from ‘borrowing’ your favourite timepieces without permission. Many users will probably leave this unlocked, but it’s a neat added extra and doesn’t interrupt the overall style of the unit.
The winders themselves are trustworthy and well constructed. They control knobs are extremely well finished and it’s refreshing to see some tactile and ornate dials which are positioned upfront. Some manufacturers position these at the back or hidden away behind the rotating cup, but these look stylish enough to be worth having as a feature.
In terms of their practical application, the control dials allow for the standard rotations; clockwise, counter-clockwise, and bi-directional. The dial positions provide options for rotating for 5 minutes and then resting for anywhere between 30 minutes or 75 minutes (which equates to between 650-1500 Turns Per Day). This will cover most owner’s requirements.
Worth mentioning independently is the somewhat unique pillow system. There are many, many ways to design a winder, but the pillow and cup section is the part most people will interact with the most and gives a big part of the overall experience. With this Jebely system there is a very smart spring-loaded clip cushion. Squeeze it closed and it’s easy to wrap any sized watch around it, then simply press the sides (as you load it into the winding cup) and it expands to the size of your watch. It’s a neat little device and does the job perfectly.
Jebely should be applauded for expanding their expertise into the full production of winders. Their range is impressive and this Quad Vintage piece is the standout in our opinion. The wood finish is beautiful, the size (250 x 210 x 258 mm) is large without being bulky, and the attention to detail is impressive.
